Need of Large-Scale HLFC Testing in Europe

In this paper, Geza Schrauf, Airbus Operations GmbH, reminds the potential of Hybrid Laminar Flow to significantly reduce the fuel burn of transport aircraft .
Achieved for large aircraft by combination of active boundary layer control through suction and suitable shaping on the wing box , these technologies require large-scale ground and flight tests in order to demonstrate their feasibility.
